About the Library

The Central Library is the heart of the institute, providing a conducive environment for learning and research. It is fully automated with modern software and follows an open access system.

Working Hours: 8:30 AM to 8:00 PM (Mon–Sat)

Library Services & Guidelines

Core Services

  • Reference Books: Must be referred inside the library. Apart from standard copies, we have an excellent collection of Britannica encyclopedias, dictionaries, and thesauruses.
  • Lending Period: Generally 15 days. The librarian reserves the right to ask borrowers to return documents before the due date if required.
  • CD-Rom Services: CD-ROMs accompanying purchased books can be referred via library systems or issued for home use.
  • Periodical Services: A wide range of technical and general journals and magazines are subscribed to. Latest issues are displayed upon receipt.
  • Newspaper Clippings: Important and relevant information published in dailies is displayed on the library notice board.
  • Question Paper Services: Previous years' VTU question papers are arranged subject-wise for photocopying. Soft copies are downloadable from the VTU website.

Membership & Loan Privileges

Every user must officially become a member to borrow resources. Membership requires an application form, one stamp-size and one passport-size photograph.

Additional Guidelines

  • Reservation: Users can reserve a book currently in circulation using the reservation register.
  • Loss of Material: Lost items must be reported to the librarian immediately in writing. They must be replaced with the exact title within a permitted time, or double the cost must be paid. Rare documents require triple the cost. For multi-volume sets, the entire set must be replaced.
  • Care of Materials: Users must not write upon, damage, turn down leaves, remove pages, or mark library materials. Always verify the condition of a book before leaving the circulation counter.

Rules & Regulations

The following rules are binding on all members of the Library:

  • Enrollment: To enroll as members, students shall fill out the application form and submit it along with 2 latest stamp-size photographs and necessary receipts. Staff members may also enroll themselves.
  • Identity: Users must carry their identity cards while entering the library.
  • Borrowing Limits: Each student member is entitled to borrow 4 books. Students should renew their borrower's cards at the start of every odd semester.
  • Lending Period & Fines: Members can retain books for a period of 15 days only. Overdue books incur a stipulated fine. Members with long overdues will lose their membership.
  • Circulation Protocol: Books lent out should not be carried back into the library before discharging them at the circulation counter.
  • Condition of Books: Borrowers must note that books are in sound condition before leaving the counter. They are responsible for any mutilation or damage after the book is lent out, and must make good the damaged book.
  • Lost or Damaged Items: If a book from a set or volume is damaged or lost, the whole set must be replaced. If lost books are not replaced, the borrower pays twice the cost.
  • Reference Only: Reference books, periodicals, dictionaries, encyclopedias, handbooks, etc., shall not be lent out.
  • Lost Cards: A member who loses their borrower's card shall lodge a written complaint to the Librarian. Duplicate cards will be issued 15 days after notice and upon paying a fee. The member is responsible for any misuse.
  • Handling Materials: Do not misplace books from one section to another. Leave consulted books on the reference tables; library staff will replace them to their respective positions.
  • Personal Belongings & Decorum: Chatting, smoking, carrying bags, umbrellas, and boxes into the library are prohibited. Personal reading materials are not allowed unless specifically permitted. Belongings must be kept at the entrance. Cell phones, purses, and valuables should not be left unattended.
  • Silence: Strict and absolute silence shall be observed in the library at all times.
  • Right of Admission: The Librarian shall refuse admission to anyone infringing the rules and regulations.
  • No Due Certificate: This certificate will be issued only after the return of all borrowed resources and is required for examination hall tickets.
